Toshiba HDD Turns 90 Degrees

Toshiba put their perpendicular hard drive onto the market and they've crammed a lot of memory into small 1.8 inch unit, 40 GB worth to be specific.

The small drive is quite small and Toshiba says it has the largest single-platter capacity hard drive, being the only one to achieve that 40 GB capacity. Compared to the non-perpendicular 40 gig 1.8 HDD, which takes two disks, this one will be a real benefit for portable handhelds and will give them even more storage capacity, especially since Toshiba said they will make an 80 gig version with two platters in it.

The drives will spin at snail like pace of 4200 rpm with the seek time averages 15 ms. Each platted can hold 206 megabits per square millimeter and it will be crammed into a mini .85-inch diameter drive.

The way the device works is in the perpendicular or vertical alignment. The three dimensional columns allow the device to hold more information than the traditional two dimensional.
