Hitachi plans to pitch its Deskstar 7K500 hard drive to digital video recorder makers who crave larger amounts of video storage.

The Deskstar 7K500 has a capacity of half a terabyte (500 GB)! This could be just what manufacturers of DVRs are looking for.

"Hitachi's new high-capacity drives allow DVR manufactures to expand the storage capacity of their products," TrendFOCUS analyst, John Donovan stated. "We expect these high-capacity DVRs to comprise the fastest-growing segment of the market, which is already growing at 90 percent annually."

In addition to the Deskstar 7K500, Hitachi has also released two other 7,200 rpm drives: The two-disk, 250 GB Deskstar T7K250, and the 80 GB Deskstar 7K80. According to Hitachi, all three of the Deskstar products will ship later in the first quarter of the year.

From a SearchStorage.com article:

The company also debuted a pair of ultra-small and small drives for the consumer market. One, dubbed "Mikey," is a one inch mini-drive that sports eight to 10 GB of storage capacity and weighs only 14 grams. A larger drive, code named "Slim," is a 1.8-inch format drive that will come in two models, one boasting 30 to 40 GB of storage, another with a capacity in the 60 to 80 GB range.

Both Mikey and Slim are scheduled to ship in the last two quarters of 2005.
