Emmy Loves To Have Her Handheld

By David A. Utter

The first Emmy Award that will be given to entertainment programming created for nontraditional viewing platforms, including PCs, mobile phones, and iPods, will be awarded on April 22nd.

Jack Bauer, Sophie Chase, and Helen Beaumont have a chance to be more than their fictional selves.

When the Daytime Emmys air, six programs will compete for the first Emmy award for "original entertainment programming created specifically for nontraditional viewing platforms."

TVWeek reported how the new Emmy shall be a regular category. Program creators demonstrated strong interest, with Peter Price, president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, calling the response to a call for entries "phenomenal":

"In a little more than two months' time from our call for entries to the deadline, 74 entries were submitted. These represent a broad cross-section of what is being done in the broadband arena, and the six nominees display outstanding use of the media, including multiple feeds, interactivity and cross-media approaches as well as entertaining video content."

The report also listed the lucky six nominees for the new Emmy:

"24: Conspiracy,"a live-action drama with weekly mobisodes about elite agents working for the counterterrorism unit. Produced by Fox Mobile Entertainment.

"It's JerryTime!," a Web site featuring short films written and scored by Mr. Zucker and animated by his brother Orrin. Produced by Ozone Inc.

"Live 8 on AOL," a Webcast that allowed users to switch from one concert site to another during coverage of the 2005 event designed to raise awareness of poverty. Produced by America Online.

"mtvU Stand In,", a series on pop icons who lecture to college-level classes. Produced by MTV Networks' mtvU.

"Sophie Chase," starring Kate Clarke and directed by Chuck Bowman, whose credits include "The A-Team," "MacGyver" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." Produced by CB Films.

"Stranger Adventures: Helen Beaumont," an interactive, brain-teasing adventure that intertwines live-action video footage and text mail. Produced by Riddle Productions.

The spread of nominees run the gamut from major media companies like News Corp, Viacom, and Time Warner, to far lesser-known producers.

That should encourage even more people to take advantage of digital tools and try for Emmy recognition too.
