Dell Shuffles Into Music Player Fray

By David Utter

The Dell DJ Ditty has a FM tuner, a blue LCD screen, and comes in silver, just in time to compete with the iPod Shuffle for holiday sales.

Really, it's all about iTunes. If someone wants to download songs from iTunes and carry them around in their native AAC format, it's going to take an iPod to do that. Getting into an inexpensive iPod means taking a look at the Shuffle, which starts at $99.

For others looking for a little more functionality than what the Shuffle offers, Dell has brought out its DJ Ditty player. Right now the 512MB player prices at $99, just like the 512MB iPod Shuffle.

The device will support MP3 and WMA file formats. Dell lists compatibility with Napster To Go as well as audio book publisher Audible. Downloads from Yahoo's Y!Music can be made via the Musicmatch Jukebox, a longtime fixture on Dell's OEM machines.

The company says the DJ Ditty will hold about 220 songs, and has a battery life of around 14 hours. The battery fully charges in 2 and a half hours. Like the Shuffle, it connects to a PC via a built-in USB connection. DJ Ditty measures only a half inch thick, and includes a blue backlit LCD display. Users can also listen to FM broadcasts via the integrated tuner.

Verizon Simplifies EV-DO In Notebooks

Jason MillerBy Jason Lee Miller

Verizon Wireless and Lenovo yesterday announced plans to integrate wireless technology using Verizon Wireless' Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network in upcoming versions of ThinkPad notebooks, beginning with the ThinkPad Z60m in October.

EV-DO-based high-speed wireless wide-area network (WWAN) transmits data at average speeds between 400-700 kbps. This will be the first time EV-DO technology, licensed from Qualcomm, will be available without additional hardware.

ThinkPad notebooks will be preconfigured for EV-DO in an effort to compete with the prevailing leading in wireless connectivity, Intel's WiFi, which is already widely available in coffee shops, bookstores, airports, and restaurants throughout the country.

Verizon says its EV-DO technology is more secure and travels greater distances than WiFi, allowing professionals on the move to have broader access in areas where WiFi is unavailable.

"As we continue to build out our wireless broadband network, we're focusing on developing products and services for today's enterprise customers and mobile professionals," said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless.

"Our relationship with Lenovo is part of our strategic plan to help serve these customers in the way that streamlines the purchasing process and gives them new wireless options to help them work more productively."
