Web A-Go-Go-Go, Intel Launches WiMax Chip

By Jason L. Miller

On the heels of WiFi is Intel's latest high speed offering, WiMax, a chip designed to pick up (fanfare please) long-range high-speed wireless Internet.

With a range, reportedly, of up to 20 miles, WiMax will enable wireless broadband speeds of up to 40 Mbps, providing T-1 speed wireless connections to hundreds of businesses and DSL level speed to thousands of residences.

WiMax has been dubbed "the next wave of wireless technology" that will expand into sectors previously not reached by high speed browsing such as mobile phones and mass transit. Conceptually, one could take his laptop on a camping trip and still connect with broadband speed-as long as the tree he's sitting under is near enough to a WiMax antenna. Even better, he could surf in his jeep on the way over.

In fact, according to The Register,

T-Mobile and Nomad are both "fiddling with the technology to get it to cope with a train moving at up to 100mph."

Now that's a gnarly wave and some serious surfing.

Though WiMax is getting a lot of attention from various providers, fixed and mobile, it probably won't be widely used by the public for a few years. The processor is expected to sell for around $45 (Techtree.com).

Intel Edges Out AMD With Dual-core Processors

By Jason L. Miller

Taking the milk to the market a full two days early, Intel put its new Pentium Extreme Edition 840 chip on sale today to ensure a lead over rival Advanced Micro Devices' own dual-core processors scheduled for release on April 21.

Both companies ramped up the release to be the first dual-core vendor for PC's and servers. And though Intel seems to be the first out of the box, the victory would remain merely symbolic as AMD's schizophrenic microchip, Opteron, has been shown to outperform Pentium

If that wasn't enough, all but Dell have chosen AMD's chip over Intel's. IBM, HP, and Sun Microsystems are releasing servers based on the Opteron chip. Dell will remain a one-chip company, locked in the embrace of Intel.

According to IT World,

"Opteron's integrated memory controller and multiple Hypertransport interconnects help it outperform Intel's Xeon processor on many benchmarks, especially ones measuring the performance of memory-intensive applications, according to third-party reviewers."

The dual-core processors boost computing power by working like "two brains" in problem solving, splitting the information to be analyzed. This especially helps with graphics and video.
